If you're being treated for cancer, a little psychology does more than help emotionally -- it can actually improve your health. A study of breast cancer patients at Ohio State University Medical Center found that those who participated in a psychological intervention program were healthier a year later than those who didn't. The program included relaxation techniques, exercise and communication skills. Disease symptoms and side effects went up only 14 percent in those who were in the program, and 29 percent in those who weren't. The study, reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, notes that the results are significant because patients who have a better quality of life are more likely to follow through on their treatment.
