Guys & Galas: Fundraisers sometimes struggle to keep the men happy

A black-tie fundraiser is in full swing at a hotel ballroom.</p><p>Tables are set with crystal and fresh flowers, and waiters are pouring wine.</p><p>A woman turns to the man next to her for some small talk and makes a startling discovery: He's snoring.</p><p>Men are often a tough sell when it comes to fancy fundraisers.</p><p>Women say their husbands or significant others complain about black-tie affairs for a multitude of reasons. The list of worries includes (but is not limited to):</p><p>-Their wives will spend too much money at the auctions.</p><p>-The conversation will be dull.</p><p>-They won't know a soul there.</p><p>-The food and drinks will be weak.</p><p>Event planners have heard these men loud and clear — they've seen them hiding out watching sports at the hotel bar — so they're constantly struggling to come up with ideas that will get men off the couch and into the ballroom.</p><p>“A lot of men just hate dressing up,” said Mary Peavey, who has chaired many fundraisers and attends several black-tie events each year with her husband, Doug.
