Snoring linked to chronic bronchitis: study

Frequent snorers are up to 68 per cent more likely to develop chronic bronchitis than people who do not snore, a new study suggests.

A team of researchers from the Korea University Ansan Hospital have linked snoring with the development of the lung disorder, which is characterized by the inflammation of the airways, a persistent cough and phlegm.

Researchers tracked the health conditions, lifestyle and snoring patterns of 4,270 people over four years through biennial interviews.

The team classified participants as developing chronic bronchitis if they reported having a cough and sputum — phlegm produced during a cough — on most days for at least three months per year over two years. Participants diagnosed with asthma were excluded from the classification.
