Loud snoring, unusual and frequent awakenings, and even bed wetting: these are just a few of the signs of possible sleep apnea. Experts say snoring in children is probably the most significant sign parents need to pay close attention to. Snoring generally signals an obstruction in the breathing passages of the nose or throat. Conway pediatrician Dr. Brian Rabon said obstruction is often caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids, which is one of the most common causes of snoring and apnea in children. Rabon said left untreated, sleep apnea can cause significant long term health problems, like blood pressure and heart issues. Immediate problems include poor concentration, inattention and moodiness, morning headaches, and poor appetite.
